I awoke early just as the sun rose letting its warmth in through the windows. The kittens kicking in my belly kept me from sleeping in so I decided to walk it off. Anxiously pacing back and forth, I could feel my body sending me signs, telling me to prepare. Today was the day.

I returned to my bed to relax but I simply could not get comfortable. Maybe I should walk around a bit more I thought to myself. I must have covered every inch of the room before I realized how hungry I was. Thankfully my new keepers always kept my food dish full because I was ALWAYS hungry.

After inhaling the food in my dish, I decided to lay in the blanket filled paw pen. My stomach began acting up – maybe I ate too fast.

It happened again but this time I could really feel the tightening and  contracting. This had to be it – My babies were coming! I caught myself purring without even realizing. It wasn’t long before my water broke and I knew my first kitten would soon follow.

My stomach continued to pulse with contractions and that’s when I saw it. A little bubble of beauty. My first born encased in his fluid sack.

Immediately I began licking to help remove the film over his little head. I licked and licked as quickly as I could just waiting to hear his first meow. Each passing moment felt like an eternity.

Excitement and relief rushed over me as I heard him call out for the first time. I was now officially a mommy! I let out a loud meow letting my new keeper know the news.

My little one wobbled and shook as he gently lifted his head. His black and white coat still wet from the fluid. I continued to clean and comforted him with my tongue since I knew his brothers and sisters were coming soon.

One by one my kittens came wet and crying for their mother. I cleaned, nursed, and cuddled them as they adjusted to their new world. I looked up as my keeper reached his hand down and gently scratched my head.

“Congratulations Luna – you are a mother to five beautiful kittens!”

I have never been so proud in my life. Although tired, I couldn’t control how loud I was purring. This love was greater than anything I had ever experienced in my life. I wished I could have stayed in that moment forever.

 

 

I laid there, my kittens crawling around me and thought back to when I was the little moon revolving around my mother.
